Lake Francis Case “A Walleye Producing Factory”

Lake Francis Case is part of the Missouri River system running through south central South Dakota. This
reservoir (despite the name, Lake Francis Case is a reservoir) stretches from the Big Bend Dam at Fort
Thompson, SD to the Fort Randall Dam at Pickstown, SD, as the crow flies approximately 110 plus miles.

Draping the shores of Lake Francis Case is Chamberlain, SD South Dakota’s “gateway to the west” and home
too much of the Lake Francis Case walleye population during the spring.  Chamberlain is conveniently located
just off of Interstate 90 a short 2-hour drive, due west of Sioux Falls, SD.  This picturesque community is tailor
made for the fisherman with abundant lodging, restaurants (which will cook your fish for you), and a casino just
north of town.

Starting in the fall and through out the winter, walleyes start stacking up in the upper reaches of Lake Francis
Case.  As the ice melts and winter turns to spring these resident walleyes are joined by more walleyes
migrating from the lower reaches of Lake Francis Case.  These migrating fish have one goal in mind, to spawn,
in and around the town of Chamberlain.  The result is a massive concentration of walleyes!  Numbers and action
is the name of the game.  If conditions are right, 50 fish days are not uncommon.

Much like the walleyes, anglers from across the Midwest migrate to
Lake Francis Case to take advantage of this outstanding fishery.
Book your trip early while openings are still available.

Similar to Chamberlain, SD in the spring, Platte, SD plays hoist to a large part of the walleye population in the
summer.
After the walleyes spawn, they begin to move south  towards their summer time haunts near the
town of Platte, SD.   The lower reaches of Lake Francis Case with its deep clear water and plentiful structure
is an ideal sanctuary for walleyes, smallmouth bass, white bass, and catfish.
The open prairie,rolling hills, and
bridges give Lake Francis Case a
unique western flavor - a must try!
